The Significance of Umrah
Umrah is an act of worship and a precious sunnah of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Some of its obligations are also similar to Hajj. Umrah however is shorter in duration compared to Hajj. There are many virtues of Umrah. Although Umrah is not obligatory but whoever can afford it, should perform it. Umrah is also a fine way of asking for forgiveness from sins and praying for rewards of Allah (SWT), his blessings and paradise by being present at His home, Khana-e-Kaaba. It purifies one from sins committed in the past and serves as a reason to gain closeness to Allah and start life afresh.
During this journey, pilgrims are considered guests of Allah and his Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). It is an experience that puts us close to Allah. It is in fact a great honor to be called to the house of Allah. There is no specified time during the year to perform Umrah, it can be performed any time, day or night.
However, an Umrah in Ramadan, holds a higher significance. It has additional rewards for the pilgrims as does the month of Ramadan for all the Muslims. Some consider it equivalent to Hajj. Hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam and is a compulsory obligation to those who can afford it once in a lifetime. A person can perform Umrah in his/her life as many times as he/she wants. Also as a Muslim Umrah should be done with the sole intention of performing it for the sake of Allah; it should not be for worldly praise or to be seen by the people or to just gain worldly profits. It is an obligation upon all Muslims (who can afford it), and one should not avoid it if one meets the criteria.
